Another Bob's Burgers Masterpiece for us!  The Pickle My Funny Bone Burger features fried pickles and a slightly spicy secret sauce.

I dried all the pickle slices before dunking them in beaten egg and coating them in a flour/cornmeal/herb breading.

I bought this clip-on thermometer awhile back and it has been priceless when doing tricky things like frying or candy-making.  Proper oil temp makes for non-soggy pickles!

It was hard not to snitch them all while I worked the rest in batches...

Hubby did his famous burgers in the cast-iron pan, his favorite method.

Assembled in all their glory...

Om. Nom. Nom.

Have you ever heard of black garlic?  Neither had I, until our obsession with Bob's Burgers started.  In one episode, Bob has entered a burger contest and most of the episode centers around his kids trying to track down the featured ingredient of his entry, the "Bet it All on Black Garlic" burger.
Literally: black garlic.
This burger was AMAZING (as if there was any doubt - I highly recommend this book).  Tangy, pungent black garlic sauce and melty mozzarella?  Yes, please.

I could eat the black garlic sauce on everything - and as a matter of fact, we did.  The recipe yielded way more than we needed for the burgers, so we used the sauce to dip our fries and roasted cauliflower.  Nom.

What's the weirdest ingredient you've ever put on a burger?
The next burger on our Tour de Bob's was the Eggers Can't Be Cheesers burger.  It features a burger topped with American cheese, a fried egg, and served on an English muffin with lettuce and hot sauce.

I'm not a fan of runny yolks (usually hubby isn't either, but he wanted to be a purist with this recipe), so I punctured the yolk and flipped my egg.

We had our leftovers for brunch this morning, and I added some blackberry jam to add a little kick.  I'm a big fan of sweet/savory combos and this was ON. POINT.

What's your favorite sweet/salty breakfast combo?  Two of my faves are from different lowcountry restaurants - the chicken and waffles from Early Bird Diner in Charleston, and the sausage and French toast sandwich from the Fat Hen on John's Island

We watch A LOT of cartoons around here.  Hubby and I are basically children, masquerading as large human "adults," and one of our faves is Bob's Burgers.  So naturally, their "burger of the day" cookbook (affiliate link) was an item on hubby's birthday wish list.  For a man who loves cartoons and cooking, it's the perfect gift....and I get to reap the benefits.
We're (mostly him) cooking our way through the book, and in the span of about a week, we've already tried two recipes.
First off: "Hit Me With Your Best Shallot," featuring sauteed shallots with fresh herbs, arugula, and goat cheese.

The second we've tried featured the same arugula and brioche buns, the "To Err is Cumin" burger...

Have you ever cooked your way through a cookbook?  Another we're unofficially making our way through is The Food Lab (affiliate link) - a great resource for the fundamentals and more sciencey aspects of cooking!

Just a couple of projects to share from Jason's birthday.  He was sweet enough to send me flowers at work on our date-a-versary back in June and it was such a nice surprise, I wanted to do something similar for him at work.  After looking at some of the more masculine floral/plant delivery options, I decided to make my own booze-quet for my bourbon-loving hubby.

I got a dozen different mini bottles of bourbon and whiskey (and one scotch....I ran out of options).  I used E6000 glue to affix a wooden skewer to the back of each one, then put a strip of packing tape across it and left it for a couple days to cure.  I got a cheapo but heavy ceramic wine holder, layered several pieces of styrofoam, then inserted the skewers.  I made a few little flowers out of tissue paper and my trusty fringe scissors (affiliate link), plus added some tissue paper (both solid and Makers Mark-printed from our visit to the distillery gift shop!).  I think he - and his coworkers - got a kick out of it, and it's a gift that keeps on giving!

Another of his gifts was a group of 6x6" canvases of photos from several distillery tours we've taken in Kentucky.  I used this tutorial from Lovely, etc. and am pleased with the results, though it would've been easier to manipulate my prints on thinner paper.  Maybe this project works better with larger format prints?  My matte photos were purchased from Snapfish, and since I was working with 6x6" canvases, I got 8x8" square prints made with a matte finish.  I'll definitely try this again - it was an easy and heartfelt gift that will have a special place near our bar and reminds us of some fun memories!

For Jason's birthday dinner at home, we did filet steaks and an amazing pear and arugula salad in The Food Lab cookbook (affiliate link) - this thing has come to serve as our kitchen Bible.  Since his birthday was on a Friday, we spread the celebrations out all weekend long, having friends over Saturday for pizza, beer, and bourbon, then dining out at a new fave spot - Main Street Public House.  It's only been open a few weeks and we've already been several times!
